The technical promise

The calculator runs in your browser. Salary, hours, state, filing status, deductions — none of it is sent anywhere as you type. The URL carries the inputs so that you can share or save a result, and that URL is yours to share or not. The only thing that leaves the browser is what you ask to leave: the computed figures when you press «Explain my paycheck», a message when you use the contact form, and an anonymous gap between your stub and the computed net if you choose to add it to the Reality Index.

What the AI receives

Gross pay, each tax, the marginal and effective rates, the deduction used, the state name and the caveats: computed, rounded figures and nothing identifying. Requests are cached by rounded profile and rate-limited by IP address, which is retained only in memory for the limit's window. The provider receives the same figures and the instruction to explain them; no account of yours exists there.

Analytics and cookies

The site runs Google Analytics 4, and only on the production domain: the check is made against the hostname in your browser, so opening a staging build requests nothing from Google at all. It sets the tag's cookies where your browser allows them, and none of its own. No advertising cookies, no fingerprinting, no cross-site tracking.

One thing about it is not the default configuration. The calculator keeps its state in the address bar — the salary, the state, the deductions you entered — so that a result can be shared and reloaded. Google Analytics normally reports the full address, which would send those figures to Google and break the promise at the top of this page. The tag here is configured to report the origin and the path only, and to drop the query string before it leaves the browser. The analytics tell us which pages are read; they do not tell us, or Google, what anyone earns.

Saved scenarios live in your browser's local storage and never leave it.

Forms and the Reality Index

The contact form sends your message and, if you give one, your email address, by email to the author; discrepancy reports are also stored with the page, state, line and figures so they can be checked, and are deleted when resolved unless you ask for the correction to name you. Reality Index submissions store the state, frequency, salary rounded to ten thousand, the percentage gap and two yes/no flags — nothing else, and no identifier that could link a submission to a person.
